H1N1: Govt moving towards mitigation phase

THE Health Ministry is moving towards the mitigation phase in efforts to control the Influenza A (H1N1) outbreak in the country, compared with the containment stage introduced since the outbreak.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said such measures were necessary after two locally transmitted cases were identified involving a clusters of six trainees at the Malaysian Maritime Academy in Melaka and 12 workers of a company in Cyberjaya.

"The containment stage is to control the disease from entering and spreading in the country whereas mitigation is to slow down the spread from within the country.

"A lot of countries including China and Hong Kong have already moved into mitigation but we are still in the containment phase because we are able to control the situation, but when we look at the clustering of cases happening, we have to quickly revise our strategy to prepare ourselves and the people early," he told reporters here today.
